Is square crop okay?

In today’s world of Instagram and other social media platforms in it I asked myself is square crop okay? But this is nothing new, there have been square-shaped photos forever. I pretty much always considered it a little tacky. Especially when my camera didn’t really record the image with that aspect ratio.

I was looking again at my archive photos and decided to try square or 1:1 crop on some of them. I plan to publish more on Instagram anyway. My Instagram profile name is PolarNightCine and I would appreciate it if you followed me there.

These are old images and I took them with my good old Canon EOS 600D DSLR or digital single-lens reflex camera and its EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens. It’s always a good idea to utilize your old images in some way if possible. Put some filters on them that you didn’t dare to do when you took them! Rotate them, crop them, over saturate, under saturate. Let your creativity take control and step out of your comfort zone!

For me, such a thing was to crop 1:1 which I haven’t really done before. I might even set to my camera to actually capture some squares someday but of course, it will be more of an exception than the norm.
